Two Years Since

This week marks two years since my Mom’s stage 4 diagnosis. I knew she hadn’t been well for quite some time. I had even gently whispered THAT word to my stepdad several weeks prior while sitting in my office.

Here’s what I wrote shortly after that surgery.

I got word Tuesday morning that my Gram had a stroke. It was Sunday afternoon some time and she wasn't found until Monday morning.

I called my Mom to tell her about Gram. And she tells me right away- you can’t go up there, you can’t leave.

My Mom has been sick for months. Telling me “they” don’t know what’s wrong. I’ve bugged and bugged. I’ve talked to my step dad.

She wasn't open about how sick she is. She blurted it out that day.

She had surgery Friday to remove a blockage in her colon. It is colon cancer.

The surgery didn’t go as planned. It was only an hour. It was supposed to be about four. The cancer has spread so much that he couldn’t remove the tumor. It is in other organs, including her stomach and kidneys and embedded in her back. She may not have survived if he did more, he told us.

The surgeon has yet to update her as she doesn’t know it wasn’t successful. He asked us to not relay this info to her until he did. We have obliged. She thinks he got the tumor out.
